"Maybe when you've rested," Kisuke said, in mock-maternal tones, making sure to let the irony in his voice make it clear to Rayojini that he by no means considered her a child for the display of emotion and the mental exhaustion it left in its wake. People needed to feel that way. That he so seldom did was one of his personal downfalls, not a pillar of strength.

He followed to the kitchen, rooting around in her refrigerator for four cold bottles without an invitation before opening one of them with his teeth and holding it out to her, careful not to get foam on her kitchen floors.

He doubted she was overly protective of them, but also that she wouldd have liked for him to have left a mess in his wake once he'd gone. Later that night. In the morning. He would leave when it was appropriate.

"It's unfortunate that that had to happen to you," he said, failing for the most part not to sound distracted as he took a quick peek around her apartment. He kept the rest of his about as spartan, although for different reasons, he supposed. He lived in his space, he supposed, a bit more than Rayojini lived in hers. He'd hung paintings. He'd purchased furnishings that suited him.

Kisuke hasn't been completely neglectful of the people that he knows need most to avoid the Grand Fisher, although he has certainly been neglectful, and he would not even for a minute excuse himself for it. But the price of the information he'll gather is worth the price on his soul -- better a person with as foul a background as himself than someone who deserves to keep their reputation. Or is that an excuse?

Either way, he knows a young lady who needs the tip, and he knows where to find her -- thanks to the fact that she is wearing his merchandise.

He finds her shortly after she leaves work, and waits on a bench beneath a lamp-post on her path home, on an otherwise abandoned street, leaning against the back of the seat with one foot folded over the opposite knee and his heavy wooden sandal dangling from long toes. He doesn't think she will pass him by without stopping. His presence can't be taken as a coincidence. Wisely, it never can.

The weather is excellent. It would be better if the air felt less sinister lately.

Yuuko's presence preceded her. Kisuke found himself at the window of his apartment above the cafe a few moments before he saw her arrive, with one finger curled around the curtains the reveal the street outside, and one teacup curled in his opposite hand. He quickly made his way to the closet to find a pair of slippers (he didn't get nearly enough visiting) and descended to get the door for her, arriving seconds after the doorbell rang with loud, careless bare footsteps down the wooden stairs.

"Yuuko-san," he said, inviting her immediately in with a wide door and leaning his back-end against it to let her pass up the stairwell. She probably would not have come to see him if she didn't plan to stay for a while. He wasn't under the impression that he rated any higher than that, for her, because that was the safer impression to have.

"What can I do for you today?"

like drops of water, like planets, like magnets, like our skin

Hearts were things beyond our ability to control.

Every time it rained, Kisuke would dwell on that thought. Such things had always been the purview of a mind like his own He'd liked little more than to wait for a warm evening, when the insects were particularly loud, and to sit out on the porch with his legs dangling, considering the heart.

He was busier in Darrow, but he still found the time to do nothing at all, which was when he would tend to get the really good thinking done. Tonight it just made him frustrated, so that eventually he made his way away from the window of his little apartment and out onto the streets, where the rain on the roads made everything an artful play of electric lights. The sort of realer than reality that tends to grace night scenes in movies. He appreciates it, and the puddles are no problem, with the wooden geta he wears made for the express purpose of rising feet above the elements.

The jittery feeling of escape having been driven from his joints, he moves to lean against a street lamp by a bus stop and fish for a smoke, when he catches the feel of a familiar soul. He hadn't been expecting to find Mike Pinocchio out here, but nor did he dislike the coincidence. In the mood that Kisuke was in, he could hardly think of a better person to happen past. Mike had given him a pleasant skin-crawling when he'd met him, and Kisuke liked to have his fix.

"Walking or taking ths bus?" he said, without turning his head to meet the man's face.

all one-way sympathies

Even toward the end of winter, it got dark early, and Kisuke soon found himself in the back of the cafe, in the shop, sitting at a low table under dim gold lights that made him yawn broadly enough to rub at his jaw where it stretched umcomfortably. He hadn't had any after-hours customers all evening, and had decided eventually to do some of the paperwork from the cafe just so that the night didn't feel like a total loss.

There'd been no sound for some time beside the meow from across the building, and the scratch of his own pen on paper. The regular swish of cars back and forth on Darrow's streets outside. But it catches Kisuke's attention when one of the cars slows, and he looks up to watch it park nearby, a bright red thing that still manages to stand out between one gray Toyota and the next on Darrow's streets.

Putting his work aside, Kisuke dropped the pen he'd been chewing at idly as he worked to the desk and stood to cross the distance, parting some of the wooden blinds to better peer out of the gap between the slats.

Realizing just who it is, he doesn't bother to disguise his stare from the window, but moves to the door when Dean Winchester finally exits his car and crosses the street. He unlocks it, poking his head out. The air fogs his breath, grabbing it and pulling it away.

"You look like you've had it rough," he says, searching out Dean's face.

i already burnt out all of my defensive

The washroom in Kisuke's apartment building has a funny smell. Most would call it disconcerting, and he does, at that, but it is all the moreso because it smells, he would swear, like the breath of a Hollow. In a word, unpleasant.

Having his slothes come out smelling that way isn't something he'd like to deal with. So in the interest of not being the number one most undesirable individual on his block, he heads elsewhere to do his laundry. Namely, Kuchiki Rukia's apartment building.

Once it's all dried, he stuffs it back into the basket and climbs the stairs. Checking the clock on the wall, he realizes it's a little past the time she ought to be home for a bit, for that matter. And so he heads out of the stairwell just down the hall from her doorstep.

Lifting a hand, he raps a few times with sharp knuckles. "Kuchiki-saaaan! Doko ni aru kaaa?"

put it in a pan, stirred it with my finger

It's only been forty-seven minutes since he's arrived, but Kisuke has already managed to glean the basics of the situation out of the surroundings through careful observation. But all of that can only get him so far, and there is no need to be so eternally surreptitious when he knows that there is a valuable source out there in the city. The most valuable of all. Someone that knows him, someone that trusts him ... just enough, and not too much.

He hasn't been to the apartment assigned to him yet. There hasn't been much reason to, besides curiosity, and he has other curiosities that are more pressing. They bring him across the city to where she is in moments. He'd felt her there as soon as he had arrived, of course. There was something about her, as if she were letting her reiatsu drift across the city, just subtley enough for those who knew where and how to look to take a peek. He knows why, of course. Whether or not she does.

She's waiting for him.

Someone far more important than Kisuke, that was, but he can take advantage of it nevertheless. He finds himself outside of her first floor apartment. Leaning forward, he breathes against the glass until it fogs, quickly drawing a small, curvy heart in the ice crystals before rapping his sharp knuckles against the glass.

"Kuchiki-saaaan, I know that you're in there, you know. Open up and let me in, would you please? It's very cold out here and I have bare ankles!"

Your character's name: Urahara Kisuke
Your character's canon: Bleach (manga)
Your character's dreamwidth username: vivememorleti
What name should be used for your character's tag? urahara kisuke
Is your character living or dead at their time of entry? Dead.

Please list any canonically pre-existing disabilities of a medical, physical, or psychiatric nature:

Please list any canonically pre-existing special abilities:

Urahara is a shinigami, roughly translating to 'death god.' His job was to help maintain the balance and flow between the living world and the afterlife. All shinigami are capable of the categories of skills listed below with training (swordsmanship, spells, hand-to-hand combat, zanpakutou use), and Urahara's skills are above that of most shinigami in existence..

Swordsmanship: Urahara's skill with a sword is such that he has instructed others in their use, and is able to handle most opponents this way without the use of spells or 'flash-steps.' His greater strength allows him the force to crater earth and cut through solid objects, and his greater speed and agility allow him to attack from unexpected angles, which allow him to best most baseline human opponent.

Kidou: Roughly translating to 'demon arts,' consisting of over a hundred spells developed over many centuries, kidou can range in use from binding and barriers (bakudou, 'way of binding') to offensive attacks (hadou, 'way of destruction') and even healing. Urahara is capable of casting spells without their incantations while still wielding great control and power. Additionally, Urahara has shown to be capable of creating novel spells for his purposes, casting simultaneous spells, chaining spells off of one another, and hiding stronger spells within decoy spells. There also exist forbidden kidou, namely spells that manipulate space, time, or require self-harm to implement; while Urahara has mastered many of these, his ability to manipulate time is reduced to almost nothing in Darrow, and his ability to manipulate space similarly hampered, leaving him only able to move himself from one point to another by tearing through reality. He cannot change the flow of time in the city and his powers cannot reach outside of Darrow's reality, ever.

Hakuda: Translating to 'hand-to-hand combat,' fighting without the use of weapons is Urahara's greatest skill. Immense speed and strength combined with unnatural physical durability allow him to deliver cratering blows bare-handed, and to shrug off attacks with no physical damage or apprent sign of pain.

Hohou: Translating to 'fast movement,' hohou is the ability to use spiritual power to boost one's speed beyond that which a human can follow. Urahara is a highly skilled user of shunpo, or 'flash step,' which enables him to travel many yards in less than the blink of an eye, far faster than the eye can follow.

Zanpakutou: Translating to 'soul-cutter sword,' all shinigami necessarily have swords forged out of their unique type of spiritual power. These swords can be shattered or rendered powerless, but are essentially always bound to the shinigami in some manner. Basic abilities of the zanpakutou include purifying souls, passing souls over to Soul Society, serving as a key to unlock the gate between the living world and Soul Society (this ability is rendered moot in the city, barring any special circumstances down the line), and as a regular bladed weapon. All zanpakutou are capable of manifesting as a sentient entity, but are directly linked to their shinigami; Urahara's zanpakutou is named Benihime (crimson princess).

Benihime's regular form is that of a shikomizue (a concealed kodachi in a walking cane) with unique abilities as follows:

Shikai: Translating to 'initial release,' when Benihime is first enabled beyond its sealed form, it becomes a shinobigatana, a kodachi with no tsuba (guard). The blade is decorated with the impression of an orchid flower. The grip is black leather, decoratively curved, with a large red tassel and string of three triangular origami charms. Benihime's general ability is that of red energy arcs capable of slicing things neatly, a technique called Kamisori (razors) used with the command, "Nake!" (Sing!). Additional abilities are Shibari (artful bondage), which creates a net or ribbon-like energy that binds an opponent, Hiasobi, Juzutsunagi (fireplay, rosary beads), which creates beads that will erupt in jets of fire when touched, and lastly Chikasumi no Tate (bloodmist shield), which allows Urahara to cut his own flesh with Benihime and allow the spilled blood to become a misty but impenetrable shield against attack.

Bankai: Translating to 'final release,' all zanpakutou have a release more powerful than the shikai techniques. Urahara's is never revealed, and is said to be something 'not suitable for training others.'

Additionally, in its cane form, Urahara is capable of using the bottom of the cane in order to force a living soul out of a living human body, without harming the body.

Tell us about your character's background:

Some amount over 500 years old, Urahara Kisuke was adopted as a minor member of the royal House of Shihouin after striking up a friendship with house head Shihouin Yoruichi. Proving to have immense potential as a shinigami, he would attend the academy and graduate to become a member of the second division of the Gotei 13, the thirteen branches of Soul Society's militia, or the Thirteen Court Guards. As a member of the second division, he became also a high-ranking member of the Onmitsukido, the Covert Ops branch of the shinigami, and would later rise to a position also as Warden of the Maggot's Nest, a prison for rogue and criminally insane shinigami.

After Captain of the 12th Hikifune's promotion, he became elected new Captain of the 12th and left his position with the 2nd. The 12th's mission statement he would change to that of exploration of new sciences and technologies, things heretofore viewed with suspicion by the fuedalistic shinigami society. He inherited his Lieutenant, Sarugaki Hiyori, from the prior regime, and was generally considered inferior to Hikifune by her. He would soon after release criminal Kurotsuchi Mayuri from the Maggot's Nest to promote him to Vice President of Urahara's new Shinigami Instuitute of Research and Development.

Captain Urahara began research into the stuff that souls were made of, and how the physics of souls worked, eventually creating in secrecy a substance which he dubbed the Orb of Distortion. The substance had the ability to alter reality itself to cause events to unfold in a way which conformed to the will of who or whatever became its master. The Orb would make heart's true desires into reality.

Aizen Sousuke had his eyes on Urahara's research for his own means however, and quickly framed Urahara for tests that Aizen ran on top-ranking shinigami, including Hiyori, turning them into shinigami-hollow hybrids. Urahara escaped the authorities after Aizen's betrayal and, still marked as a criminal of highest order, escaped Soul Society along with Yoruichi and childhood friend Tessai to flee to the Living World indefinitely.

He was banned from Soul Society, and lived out over one hundred years inside an artificial body of his own construction as a human, waiting for his chance to reveal Aizen's ultimate deception to Soul Society, if not totally clear the shame of the Shihouin and his name. With the help of Kurosaki Ichigo, a boy he himself had a hand in the birth of, Urahara found his solution. And, using Ichigo, Rukia,, and their friends as chess pieces in his game against Aizen, was eventually able to defeat his foil, though he would not return to Soul Society until the former Captain-Commander's death, during Soul Society's darkest hour.

Your character's personality:

One-hundred and ten years ago, Urahara Kisuke was a different man in some ways, and if nothing else, Kisuke represents the death of naivete without the accompanying death of hope.

During his youth, he was a care-free. As he aged and became a member of the Gotei 13, though he did not lose that playfulness, the more responsibility laid on his shoulders, the more others viewed him as a nervous, flustered person - who was a few test tubes short of a chemistry set. He was unsure of himself when making decisions for a group, and lacked the confidence that he had the ability to be a good leader. He was at times confused with how to deal with the needs, desires and emotions of those under his command, and was easily overwhelmed by those with decisive personalities. But he proved to be a person very capable of easing into new roles, and over his nine years of captaincy became more resolved.

He has always been more laid-back and jovial in comparison to others, seen often as flighty or lazy, and this holds true to present day, despite how his exile and his human lifestyle have changed him. Kisuke is a man who generally prefers harmony to strife, who is now content with a humble life selling candy and herbal remedies. Describing himself as 'nothing more than the owner of a small-time candy shop,' he always offers what hospitality he can and speaks to others politely, if at times ironicly.

When he does become passionate about something, he can become downtrodden if others don't notice his enthusiasm. He is an obvious hard-worker when the situation calls for it, and though good-humored, is several orders of magnitude more compotent than he portrays himself as being. Though he is eccentric, he believes that given a suitable outlet, all people can channel their abilities, special or otherwise, into something constructive instead of destructive, and that a strong will is stronger than any steel sword.

He believes that people should be honest about what they are feeling. That failure is a chance to learn, that help is always available, and that 'can't' is a foul word.

Despite his facade, Urahara is deceptively cunning, using idle conversation and outward concern about the situation to misdirect others. He prefers to act only as a catalyst, but when necessary, his military training comes back to him, and he can become an intimidating, aloof, blunt authority, relentless and unsympathetic toward weaknesses, as he firmly believes there is no excuse in being a soldier who has lost their will to fight. Everything should be done with the whole heart.

Ichigo once remarks that the only thing Urahara as his mentor has ever armed him with was "nothing, but courage."

When Urahara had mastery of the Orb before attempting to destroy it, he believed that the Orb's ability was to blur the lines between human, shinigami, and Hollow, because that was his heart's greatest desire - which speaks both to his desire for harmony, and his struggle against his amoral nature, which sought to pervert life itself.

All shinigami are capable of the categories of skills listed below with training (swordsmanship, spells, hand-to-hand combat, zanpakutou use), and Kisuke exhibits skills far beyond the average shinigami.

Swordsmanship: Using a combination of powerful single blade strikes and cunning deceptions, Kisuke prefers to keep out of opponent striking distance as much as possible, taking advantage of his exceptional agility to attack from unusual angles and confuse opponents. He wears opponents down and keeps them nervous, unsure of his attack patterns. When on the offensive, he is shown to keep up a quick and rapid assault that forces most on a constant defense.

Kidou: Roughly translating to 'demon arts,' the majority of Kisuke's skill comes in the form of kidou mastery. Consisting of over a hundred spells developed over many centuries, kidou can range in use from binding and barriers (bakudou, 'way of binding') to offensive attacks (hadou, 'way of destruction') and even healing. There also exist forbidden kidou, namely spells that manipulate space, time, or require self-harm to implement, all of which Kisuke is familiar with and capable of utilizing. He is shown to be capable of breaking complex spiritual barriers, and of creating unique spells that can remain undetected until his trap is sprung and be used in sync with each other to activate in a chain reaction.

Hakuda: Translating to 'hand-to-hand combat,' Kisuke has shown to favor hand-to-hand combat when the option is available. As a former high-ranking corps commander, in addition to melee combat, Urahara has high mastery in the art of stealth combat, and has shown impressive skill in staying hidden and unseen while maneuvering to his intended target.

Hohou: Translating to 'fast movement,' hohou is the ability to use spiritual power to boost one's speed beyond that which a human can follow. Kisuke has shown himself capable of utilizing the technique shunpo, or 'flash step,' which enables him to travel many yards in less than the blink of an eye. An extremely skilled practitioner, he is able to travel hundreds of yards in milliseconds, or even faster than the human eye can see.

Benihime's regular form is that of a shikomizue, a thin blade hidden within his pinewood cane. Its unique abilities are as follows:

Shikai: Translating to 'initial release,' when Benihime is first enabled beyond its sealed form, it becomes a sleek kodachi, stamped with an orchid design, with a black leather grip with a decorative curve, ending in a large crimson tassel dangling from the pommel. Being an sacrificial energy-type sword, Benihime's general ability is that of firing crimson-colored energy strikes that create a loud noise of singing fireworks. Benihime is capable of a few named attacks, notably: The Blood Mist Shield, activated by and utilizing Kisuke's spilled blood to create a physical barrier against attack; Rend Asunder, which shatters the shield into shards which can then be used as offensive projectiles; Artful Bondage, which creates an explosion of blood-red ribbons to bind the enemy; Fireplay, which creates black beads along the ribbons which explode in a geyser of fire once touched with the blade's tip.

Bankai: Translating to 'final release,' all zanpakutou have a release more powerful than the shikai techniques. Kisuke has never revealed the nature of his bankai. It is characterized as a sacrificial ability.

Note: Kisuke's ability to access shikai and bankai are heavily dependent on his strength and endurance at the time, and cannot be accessed indefinitely at any given moment. All of the abilities listed are within his reach only when at peak performance.

Tell us about your character's background:

Your character's personality:

As Kisuke aged, a playful nature faded due to new responsibilities, and the more responsibility laid on his shoulders, the more others viewed him as a nervous, flustered, quiet person. He was unsure of himself when making decisions for a group, and lacked the confidence that he had the ability to be a good leader. He was at times confused with how to deal with the needs, desires and emotions of those under his command, and was easily overwhelmed by those with stronger personalities. Despite his discomforts, he also proved to be a person very capable of easing into new roles, and over his nine years of captaincy became more resolved.

Always a generally laid-back and jovial person, he is seen often as flighty or lazy. Kisuke is a man who generally prefers harmony to strife and who is now content with a humble life selling candy and herbal remedies. Describing himself as a 'mere small-time businessman,' he always offers what hospitality he can and speaks to others politely, if sometimes ironically so. An obvious hard-worker when the situation calls for it, Kisuke is several orders of magnitude more competent than he portrays himself as being. Though he is playful and eccentric, he is skilled and intelligent, and believes that given a suitable outlet, all people can channel their abilities, special or otherwise, into something constructive instead of destructive, and that a strong will is stronger than steel.

Kisuke prefers to keep what he is feeling to himself, but believes others ought to share and be honest about what they are feeling. He often tells others that he isn't angry with them when they fail, and that they are a part of a team and not on their own, and that he will make sure things work out in the end. He often inquires about how others are feeling, and if the response he receives is about how they are physically feeling, he will then press to know about 'how they feel inside,' in their hearts.

Despite his simple lifestyle, he is deceptively cunning, using idle conversation and outward concern to misdirect others. Rarely intervening directly, he prefers to stay on the sidelines and act only as a catalyst, having others do his heavy lifting for him (even if he's more than capable of heavy lifting.) When weakness is spotted, he can become an intimidating, aloof, blunt figure, relentless and unsympathetic, as he firmly believes there is no excuse for getting oneself hurt if one is trying to save others, and has said himself that going incapable into enemy territory is suicide, and that a soldier who has lost their will to fight is only a liability on the battlefield. If one isn't prepared to do something to the very end, they shouldn't elect to do it.

Ichigo once remarks that the only thing Urahara as his mentor has ever armed him with was "nothing, but strength of will and courage."
